Kara no Kyoukai/Garden of Sinners/DIE Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream #6: Oblivion Recorder
Posted by hatemachine
IS COMPLETELY
The sixth Kara no Kyoukai film, based on the novels by Kinoko Nasu of Type Moon fame, finally made its way into my hands.
Previous adaptations of his works have not fared so well – Studio DEEN’s handling of Tsukihime was disappointing, and though Fate/Stay Night was passable, it certainly didn’t live up to the high expectations everybody had (hopefully the recently announced Unlimited Blade Works will make up for it and even if it doesn’t, it’s got Rin Toesucka so I’ll be happy no matter what). This time around, ufotable would be handling the reins to the anime adaptation, and after a shaky start with the first film (which was more of a “what the fuck is going on” feeling), they’ve done fairly well since. The third film, Remaining Sense of Pain and the fifth one, Paradox Spiral, really impressed me all around, and the music has been nothing short of impressive. Combine that with the well done animation, interesting plot and my hard-on for Type Moon, and that equals high expectations for Oblivion Recorder.

So we start with a pretty starry sky and some nice flowers…

…followed by obvious phallic imagery(!).  This tasty shadow starts to pulsate (!!!) and some girl looks into the room before scampering off. This is the perfect set up for a doujinshi, right?

So anyway, it turns out this is a flashback, and we’re shown a young Rin Tohsaka Rin Toesucker Azaka Kokuto sitting down with her brother Shiki Tohno Mikiya before we’re brought back to the present day of January 1999. That was my sophomore year of high school. God, this is what I’ve fucking done with my life since? No wonder I’m such a disappointment. But who gives a shit about me, let’s get back to the film!

Anyway, Akiha Tohno Kokuto is paired up with Shiki to eliminate a magus using fairies to steal the memories of students at the Reien Academy, as well as investigate a suspicious suicide.

So during their investigation into the thing the duo meet the only real two characters of consequence, some purple haired chick named Ouji and a teacher named Satsuki Kurogiri. They act as suspicious as some…uh, suspicious thing (forgive me, I haven’t written a real blog entry in ages) and true enough, they’re both the culprits! WHAT A HUGE SURPRISE AND TWIST!  FUCK MAN DID NOT SEE THAT COMING AT ALL

There’s a neat fight sequence between Kokuto and Ouji, while there was a boring match up between Shiki and Kurogiri, though that should have been expected as the movie goes out of its way to say this fucker is almost completely useless. The only thing to come out of it was Kurogiri, aka God’s Word, having the ability to restore memories, and does so for Shiki, who had about two years worth of time missing. Before the director cuts away and you find out what his ultimate fate is, God’s Word makes an ominous comment that’s…uh, ominous? Fuck, no wonder I stopped writing blog entries: they’re difficult!

So fuck that, here’s more photos, most of them of Kokuto acting moé-moé. I’m looking forward to the final movie, even if I was slightly indifferent with this one.  For the record, here’s how I rate the current films: 5 = 3 > 1 > 6 > 4 > 2

Actually it was J.C. Staff that created the atrocious Tsukihime anime.
Personally I thought this one left out quite a few details from the original plot, but most of the cuts were just backstory on Kurogiri and Ouji that made the whole thing seem really dark (and since this one seemed to go out of it’s way to seem the happier of the series, it probably would’ve conflicted with their objectives). Azaka’s fightscene was pretty cool at least, with it’s Itano Circus fairy missiles and all.
And I totally agree with you about Rin and the UBW movie… hopefully it’ll kick a lot of ass.
Your article is very interesting and useful.
